History of the Archaeological Department

Development of the Archaeological Department was not parallel to the development of the Museum. The first archaeological material was purchased as late as 1932, and the first archaeologist in the Museum, Miodrag Grbić, was its Director at the same time. Since 1941, a special archaeological collection has been formed. Till the World War II, the Shtaudinger’s collection was the basis of this department. After 1945, the material consisted of 322 objects. Through archaeological excavations, purchases and gifts, the number of artefacts rose to over 48.000.
